Canterbury Park’s one-mile, 14-acre turf track is critical for horse safety and national broadcast presentation. When Kevin Cole stepped into the turf manager role in 2019, he faced the challenge of maintaining a high-performance racing surface without deep turf experience. In addition to the track, another 14 acres required consistent playability, strong root development, and a clean, professional appearance under televised conditions. The need was clear: build a sustainable program backed by trusted expertise.
Approach

Nexterra's Approach

Hands-On Turf Management Elevates Racing Surface

What began as a cold call became a long-term partnership led by Geoff Jordan, Managed Turf Specialist at Ramy Turf Products (a Nexterra company). From day one, Geoff worked directly with Kevin, providing hands-on, practical guidance across all aspects of turf management.

Rather than a one-time fix, the relationship evolved into ongoing, one-on-one support throughout each racing season. Together, they implemented a comprehensive program covering mowing, irrigation, fertility, and pest management.

The program is anchored by soil testing three times per season, allowing for data-driven decisions that evolve with conditions. Brandt/Grigg liquid fertilizers and soil amendments, along with TerraMax Tazo products, were incorporated to improve soil structure and biological health.

Regular in-season visits ensure continuous monitoring of soil moisture, root depth, turf firmness, and overall performance. Special attention is given to rapid repair of hoof impact areas, similar to golf course divot management, maintaining a consistent and safe racing surface..

Outcome

Through this ongoing partnership, the Canterbury Park turf track has been transformed into one of the premier racing surfaces in the Midwest. Soil health has improved significantly, with increased beneficial microbial activity supporting stronger, more resilient turf.

This progress has enabled a substantial reduction, and near elimination, of herbicide and fungicide use. More importantly, the track now delivers consistent safety, durability, and visual quality, meeting the demands of both elite competition and national broadcast standards.

Today, Canterbury Park attracts horses, trainers, and spectators from across the country. Just as important, it stands as a reflection of what’s possible when technical expertise is paired with a true working relationship, where Ramy Turf Products is not just a supplier, but a trusted partner in the field, season after season.
